Hazardous areas, where inflammable materials are stored or handled are
exposed to risk of fire, due to ignition of flammable materials by spark
emission from the exhausts of internal combustion engines.
The unburnt hot carbon particles emitted from vehicles plying in such
areas may be the source of such ignitive spark.
Vehicle exhaust spark arresters are fitted to the exhaust vents of vehicles
plying in the hazardous areas to prevent the egress of hot carbon particles
from the exhaust vents from coming in contact with the hazardous materials.
The spark arrester design allows normal engine operation without any backpressure.
